2012: Tell The Mayans You Made It

2012 was an exciting year, with the momentous arrival of Miss Fiona Alice in early September. We moved into a new house in Lawrenceville this summer. The current trend of playing DJ to Stella’s dance parties will continue. Look forward to Fiona bopping to the beat in 2013.

Abracadabra
Steve Miller Band | Abracadabra

This is the number one, most requested song in my household, and it goes by, “Abba Dabba”, and vigorous dancing ensues. I doubt that I will ever be able to hear this song and not think of Stella and her dope moves.

If I Ever Feel Better
Phoenix | United

Every song that I hear from this band I end up liking.

American Music
Violent Femmes | Permanent Record

Came across this outfit again while combing through the library, and this track really stood out. Enjoy!

Croaking Lizard
The Upsetters | Super Ape

I have owned the Super Ape album for many years, but it was only this year that I discovered this bonus track featuring the styling’s of Prince Jazzbo, and I was hooked. Thank you again Pandora.

Heart It Races
Architecture in Helsinki | Heart It Races-EP

Have enjoyed this song from the first listen, and will try out more Dr Dog, who is featured here and Architecture in Helsinki and report back next year.

Other People
Beach House | Bloom

I listened to this album the most this year by far, and this is one its top three tracks in my opinion. I am surprised at how much I like this band, but I do, and I suggest that you get on the Beach House train.

Born Alone
Wilco | The Whole Love

Kind of new to this band, which was featured song on NPRs All songs Consider listener poll.  I enjoyed this song from the get-go.

Kids
MGMT | Oracular Spectacular

Sara and I have kids in 2012, and it is a wonderful game-changer, and game-changer is the operative word.

Live Good Today
The Congos | Fisherman Style

This is really an album of Congos’ covers, and this one is done by Prince Jazzbo as well. The Congos were awesome, and Prince Jazzbo only elevates them.

Cult Logic
Miike Snow | Miike Snow

Don’t really know much about this band, but I heard this song way back in 2010 right after the blizzard, from a YouTube video of a bunch of guys skiing around different parts of Pittsburgh. It was quite captivating. Sometime this year, I heard this song again, and figured out that sequence of events. For what it is worth, here it is.

Boys Don’t Cry
The Cure | The Cure: Greatest Hits

Heard this classic again recently, and was humming it enough that I had to slot it back into the general rotation. When these guys were good, they were good.

Heebie Jeebies
Louis Armstrong | The Complete Hot Five & Hot Seven

Went down to New Orleans for the big wedding for Lauren & Matt and had a great time. Combed through old favorites from the big easy, Louis could bring it.

Werewolves of London
Warren Zevon | Excitable Boy

Great tune, like the way this guy thinks.

No Mention
Yellowman & Fathead | Just Cool

I think the true origin of hip-hop is reggae/dancehall, and that this is self-evident. Add in the crazy laboratory that is the Jamaican music scene over the years.

Wishes
Beach House | Bloom

Again one of my three top picks from the new Beach House record. All my best wishes to you and yours in 2013, keep on, keeping on, it infuriates those Mayans.
